Noon the seventh day, Yes, I am a vampire
Eva follows you
everywhere with her bow ready. You have explained to her that
your instructions are to let the wizard come. Let him set up a
gate. Then ambush him from behind.
Restlessly you have been walking around the sleepy little
settlement. The vampire children are still resting in Eva’s
attic. Everything is as ready as it's going to be.
The sun light doesn’t seem to bother you. Regardless you
and Eva go inside the chapel to wait. The two of you sit there
silently for hours. Y’all say nothing. Slowly your
hearing extends through the walls. There is nothing moving
anywhere. Outside you can hear an occasional bird. The
rustle of the wind. Otherwise everything is quiet and still.
You get the feeling that the two of you sitting here like this,
silently listening, you would know if someone was walking in the
woods. Up to a kilometer away. You're sure you would hear them.
It is getting late in the afternoon.
You have watched the sunlight from the west windows move across the
floor of the chapel. Now it is touching the east wall.
The sun is getting low in the sky. This is when you are almost
deafened by a loud thunderclap. In a snapping of his black
robes a wizard appears out of thin air in front of the altar.
He has a staff and his back is facing you. He quickly turns
around and his face lights up when he sees you. You immediately
notice that he is wearing a necklace with the largest diamond you
have ever seen in your life.
Eva and you rise
from the pew and go to meet him. He speaks first “Well
done Lubik. I was worried you might get eaten by a gator before
you made it this far.” You speak to him formally and with
grace “Welcome. We are pleased to have your magus in our
little village.” He smiles at this and stops in front of
the two of you. “I trust Eva was able to keep you safe in
the ghastly swamp.” You respond to this before Eva says
anything. “She has been a blessing, and a wonderful
guide.”
Suddenly he becomes all
business. “Well let's get this gate open. The
others are waiting.” With that he strides out of the
chapel. The two of you follow. He goes to a spot where
there is a path that seems to go nowhere. He strikes a wizardly
stance and goes into a ritual. He stretches forth his staff
with his right hand and grasps the diamond necklace with his left.
He starts speaking in a strange tongue. Suddenly he traces a
glimmering outline with his staff. The glowing square shape of a gate
appears.
Without missing a heartbeat you
attack him from behind. This is going to be a charge attack for
double damage with your magical spear at DX+7 total. Your only
real chance will be to aim for the head. If you can do five
points of damage, after armor, it will knock him unconscious.
Unbeknownst to you he has a ring of Iron Flesh which stops six points
of damage from all attacks. This will make Eva’s bow
useless unless she scores a critical hit. The average damage of
your spear, with two hands (1+1), is 4.5 or nine points on a charge
attack. This will only do three points after armor. Not
enough to knock him out. You will have to do eleven or more
points. Your chances are not good. Don’t forget
that it is DX-6 to strike the head.
If
he can fight the next turn he will roast you with a 6D wizards wrath
for 6+6 damage. Eva will fall the turn after that.
Since
wizards wrath can be shaped like anything he wants, he will shoot
silver crosses at you. Your only hope is to do massive damage
to the head on the first blow.
