Part 003
The stair bends to the right and ends abrubtly at a wall.
In a gap
between the last three steps and the wall is an iron lever That she kicks
over toward the wall. A sound of metal chains clank somewhere and the
mass
of stone rises up in a steady jerking motion.
There is a passage way going left and right. There are
three teenage
girls there with one candle. Fifteen and sixteen. They are excited
and
glad to see you.
''Rebecca!''
''Uncle!''
''You made it!''
They gather around and help her hold you up. They look
sadly at your
wound. They smile at your face. They look sadly at your wound.
Rebecca steps back and holds her candle toward you. Her
voice is empty
and flat, it holds no emotion at all. ''He doesnt remember anything.''
The three young girls looks scared for a moment. Eyes
darting around. A
faint panic in the air. You feel like they may drop everything and
run.
The youngest one looks into your eyes for a moment.
She moves closer. Her eyes are bright and clear.
She is determined, and
there is awareness in those eyes. She steps back.
''Uncle is still in there.'' she says.
They relax noticeably. Taking a stretcher from the wall
they lay it down
and help you to sit on it and lay back. The four of them take a handle
each
and lift from the knees with their backs straight.
They set off at a quick pace down the tunnel. The one
in front on the
right with a candle, and Rebecca in the back on the left. Five minutes
later you enter an enormous room.
It is lit by seven candles and filled with children. Almost
all of them
are seven or eight years old. The smell of cooking fills the air and
a long
table has been set. Half of the children gather around in great excitement.
''Uncle.''
''Uncle.''
''Uncle, youre back!''
