People carousing on the second
story balconies are murmuring. Some are confused. Some point to
the roof tops. Some are shouting boos at you through cupped
hands. The sky is heavy with low clouds, awash in red glow from
the fires around the city.
The crowded streets have backed off
forming a circle of spectators. Many are watching Roget who has
one of the children trapped under a net. The snarling child is
held in place crouched to the ground. Roget standing on the pole.
The town guard arrives after the fight. Four Halberdiers come
through the circle of spectators. Any one of the surviving drunk
men will go to the guards. Now sounding quite sober and clear
headed he will explain that the children came out of no where,
started biting them, and this monk (pointing to you) saved them.
The guard knows who you are, and seem to have been briefed on the
vampire problem. They will arrange to have the bodies removed,
will take the surviving men to the station and debrief them. Now
about the prisoner child.
One of the guards takes a pair of
shackles off his belt. You notice all the guards are wearing
gauntlets. The metal gloves protect him as he locks the one of
the child's wrists through the net. The vampire youth becomes
rigid as though frozen. Untangling the net from the child he then
locks the other free hand. Then he removes the shackle from the
first wrist with a key, completely takes the net off, and
re-locks it.
The shackles are a perfect fit, even on
the small writs. One of the guards walks over to you and says
``We've got it from here.'' A police driver shows up with a horse
and cart. The guards start loading up the bodies.
