If an army loses its best commander or general and all moral and direction is shot-to-hell, is it the grunt's fault that the war is lost? I see how that makes sense. Good leaders span across all endeavors.

      Ok, let's get down to the issue as I see it. My Name is Deq, and let me start off by saying I'm new at this kind of deep theological debate so bare with me as I'm probably gonna make several mistakes. Thanks, now I hope to introduce a new way of looking at the old idea. The idea of “leadership”.

     I submit to you that leadership never was the issue. Never in the history of the entire world. That leadership really has nothing to do with anything.

     Now I've probably just lost everyone right there. Various thoughts going through the mind. Easy ways to prove me wrong just spring unbidden and fully formed from you brow. Of course, people say it's about Leadership, people have always been talking about leaders since the dawn of time. All the History books are written about Leaders. Why even the history of Scientific discovery is defined by it's leaders.

     So what in the world am I talking about?

     I'll tell you. Yes, yes, I'm sure you have already decided that I have nothing new, or interesting to say. That using a word like Followership doesn't really mean anything. Or saying the secret real history of the world is about Followers is a non statement, because Followership isn't really a word in the dictionary, and I haven't even bothered to define it while speaking here before you today.

     And for that I'm sorry. But I think people already know what I mean when I say followers. That a quarterback is nothing without a good team. That many people try to lead but how many of us actually follow them? But it's worse than that. For some reason it has become apparent to me that the Meme of Leadership is inherently at war with the suppressed Meme of Followership.

     Consider someone who dares to defend Blizzard. They used to call those “Fan boys” back in the day. They were ridiculed so hard that people stopped defending game companies entirely. And because no one is allowed to be a loyal follower, we find ourselves without any clear leaders. Is it right to hate everything said by the company that makes the game we play?

     How did we let this happen? Are people just running to keep up with the latest greatest hip thing. Oh, oh oh, slamming the game company makes one look leet! Let's slam everything they do! Or maybe it was a couple of people who were willing to lead stepped up out of the fan base BUT IMEDIATELY GOT RIPPED TO SHREDS BY THE REST OF THE FAN base, and like a scattered zerg we neither want to follow or to lead because of what happened to those who tried before us.

     Thanks for listening this long. I see that some of the chairs are empty now, this means a few of you have walked our already. But to those of you who remain I will now sum up.

     We now find ourselves in the Ironic position that the secret followers, the unnoticed practitioners of followership who have been hidden among us all along are being told bad things. They are being told by their guild leaders that it's Blizzard's fault and hard choices have to be made. The quiet followers are being told, good job mate but from now on I will only lead the few. The faithful who showed up on time for almost two years are being told if we don't cut you, we may cut they person standing next to you. In a word the Followers are being told that they are NOTHING without their one leader.

     That bears repeating.

     The guild leaders are telling their followers that followership is NOTHING without the one true leader. Namely themselves. The Guild Leader.

     Now why the skilled follower is allowing themselves to believe this is anyone's guess. And I don't expect anyone to really understand how much more important smart followers have been to the history of the world than those glory stealing self aggrandizing people the history books speak of, the so called leaders. But if you high end raiders allow your GM's to tell you that you will kill no more bosses, and you will get no more loot, then It is my job to point out the possibility that you are being deceived. That the power was always yours. And that you never needed anyone's permission to be the best before. So why start now.
